A Spot for Frog
2022 · 16m · USA
Directed by Evan Bode
Genres: animation, coming-of-age, LGBTQ+
Tones: contemplative, tender
A creative non-binary teen named Frog, locked out of the school art room, struggles with anxiety while searching for a new place to eat lunch. Live action blurs with animation to externalize the inner emotional world of a kid trying to find somewhere to belong.

It's a competent anxiety portrait with a non-binary protagonist—good bones, safe execution—but the hybrid animation never quite commits to subversion; it illustrates the emotional state rather than scrambling it, which is what a real genre-bender would do.
Bode stakes this in the lineage of animated introspection (echoes of Persepolis, perhaps a touch of Flee's formal restraint), and the precision of matching custom score to frame-by-frame animation suggests a filmmaker thinking formally about how visual rhythm carries emotional weight.
The decision to let the animation erupt *directly* from live action—not cutting away to a separate animated sequence, but allowing them to bleed into each other—is the hinge that makes a modest premise about a kid finding lunch into something genuinely moving.
Reviews
Not only my favorite Outfest L.A. 2023 short, but one of my favorite shorts of all time.
The hybrid editing of live-action overlaid with animation excellently captures the anxiety of the situation, with music perfectly timed to the action.
