Blomkamp's doing the post-apocalyptic morality play that a thousand other filmmakers would sleepwalk through — except he's not subverting it, he's just executing it competently, which is exactly why this doesn't crack my skull open.
A disciplined examination of collective sacrifice within the sci-fi canon, where each narrative choice (the pacing of revelation, the measured blocking of the tribe) situates itself deliberately in the lineage of survival-ethics cinema, from *Dr. Strangelove* through *The Road*.
The film lives or dies on whether you buy the tribe's fracturing in that final sequence, and Blomkamp's smart enough to let the editing—those tight cuts between faces, the sound design dropping out—do the persuasion rather than dialogue.
