The scouts

It's a time-capsule reunion premise that could've been treacly, but Mendoza resists the urge to make it sentimental—there's real friction in how these people have drifted, and she lets that awkwardness breathe instead of resolving it. Genre-wise it's conventional, but the refusal to sentimentalize feels quietly subversive.

Felix

A formally precise study of how promise and time reshape friendship; Mendoza situates herself in the lineage of ensemble pieces about retrospection (Dardenne, Koreeda nearby) while the editing orchestrates the collision of these lives with real compositional care. The tonal management—melancholy threaded with comedy—shows the hand of a considered filmmaker.

The film lives or dies on whether you believe the reconnection moment, and Mendoza gets it there through a single choice: letting silences sit longer than comfortable, letting the actors' faces do the arithmetic of 25 years. That patience with quietness—that's the decision that makes an 11-minute sketch feel earned.
