The premise reads like every other trauma-healing fantasy you've seen in a hundred festival shorts—disabled kid, magical helper, monster as metaphor—and yet somehow it sidesteps the worst of its own clichés, which is either a miracle or a sign I'm getting soft.
The film understands the grammar of contemporary magical realism in service of disability narrative, sitting comfortably in a lineage of recent work that treats the surreal not as escape but as literal representation of interior experience.
The decision to let the caseworker remain grounded and practical while Andy's world tilts into the surreal—never explaining or over-literalizing the monster—is what keeps this from collapsing into sentiment; Arnette and Rubenis-Stevens trust the audience's eye more than their script.
