Directed by Scott Lazer
Genres: documentary, sports
Tones: humorous, tender, whimsical
Each year over 1,000 people audition for spots on the US Open tennis tournament's Ball Crew — the ball people trained to be invisible during play. With no upper age limit unlike other Grand Slams, the film follows a diverse group of applicants from teens to a 60-year-old returnee through tryouts, selection, and the tournament itself.

The scouts
A documentary about people specifically trained to be invisible — sweet inversion, but it's a GQ piece, so the SXSW-shaped uplift is locked in. Cute, breezy, lightly forgettable.
Lazer celebrates precisely those instructed to disappear — a Sherman's March logic applied to invisibility, with the court's geometry doing structural work. SXSW premiere notwithstanding, GQ branding signals a polished register rather than vérité daring.
GQ Sports / SXSW World Premiere doc at 13:28 that uses the court's geometry as both visual and structural device while foregrounding people trained to disappear — that inverted attention is the whole pitch and it's a good one. The no-upper-age-limit angle gives the casting natural range from teens to 60.
Reviews
The film finds the right balance between having enough stories to get a diverse perspective but not too many so that we are prevented from getting emotionally involved in each individual journey — a breath of fresh air for the sports and competition documentary genre.
Lazer brings an adventurer's eye to a world most tennis fans never notice, finding genuine heart and humor among the people trained to be invisible on the court.
