The premise is funny enough—birthday ennui as a vehicle for spy-movie larping—but it's also exactly the kind of high-concept whimsy that gets greenlit by committee; I'm curious whether Ariola actually subverts the escalation or just milks it.
A cleanly executed absurdist comedy that understands its own tonal register and the grammar of buddy-film pacing, though it risks settling into the safe zone between parody and pastiche rather than interrogating either.
The real move here is probably the decision to keep the detective's actual investigation—the mundane observations, the unglamorous following—deadpan and present; that tension between banal reality and Jason Bourne fantasy could be everything.
Reviews
What follows is a weird and wonderful birthday treat as Nick hires a private detective to, er, pursue him and his pal Kevin all over town. Shaggy dog stories like this always seem to work best in Los Angeles, so we hope 'The Nice Guys', 'The Big Lebowski', and 'Bday Private Dick' share a well-earned drink some time.
