The scouts

It's a health food shop cancer-diagnosis rom-com that somehow avoids being twee — Baron leans into the genuinely awkward spaces where vulnerability and attraction collide, which is rarer than it should be.

Felix

A formally assured chamber piece that sits comfortably in the British indie tradition, with the kind of restraint and tonal balance that recalls early Ayoade — the editing knows exactly when to let silence do the work.

Margot

The film's entire architecture hinges on Baron's decision to play the diagnosis reveal as mundane admin rather than melodrama, which transforms every subsequent interaction between these three characters into something both funnier and more honest than the premise suggests it has any right to be.

Reviews

British Director Sam Baron's sensitive and hilarious exploration of the fragility of masculinity is something we have come to love here at Directors Notes and so we're happy to see him continue to mine that rich vein in his latest short Big Ears. Baron employing his skills as a writer and director to tread the very fine line between the tragic and the, frankly, awkward hilarity of Kaan's situation.
