Berta, a young journalist crushed by stress, visits the old theatre in which her grandmother worked the night before it is demolished, but it is not entirely abandoned: Mortando Malone and Big Blue Cat, her old imaginary friends, will help her solve an impossible case: recover her desire to dream.

It's treading awfully close to the manic-pixie-dream-friend territory, which usually makes me want to flee — except López Guerrero commits so fully to the absurdist logic that it almost transcends the premise, landing somewhere between whimsy and genuine pathos that feels earned rather than imposed.
The film sits comfortably in a lineage of magical-realist storytelling — Cocteau's playful ghosts, the theatrical melancholia of Tarkovsky — yet the demolition-night framing and the specific geometry of memory-as-performance suggests a considered formal argument about how we recover ourselves through art.
What elevates this beyond a precious indie dramedy is the decision to let the imaginary friends remain *completely* unselfconscious — no winking, no meta-commentary — which forces the emotional work entirely onto Berta's face and the editing rhythm between her present numbness and the theatre's archive of feeling.
