Everyone's going to coo about the surrealism and melancholy, but honestly the premise—identity dissolution through compulsive caretaking—is something we've seen a dozen times in prestige animation. It's well-executed disaffection, which means it's still disaffection.
Gao's formal control here is worth examining: the way the pet market's visual grammar mirrors the girl's internal fragmentation, each frame a studied composition in the lineage of introspective animation from Tomm Moore onwards. A film that knows exactly what it's doing within its tradition.
The genius move is sound design—the way the ambient noise of the market gradually *absorbs* the girl's breathing and movement until you can't tell where she ends and the environment begins. That single choice does the existential work; everything else is just supporting it.
