A weekend romance at a rural hotel—sounds like every other Airbnb-era indie drama, except Díaz actually trusts the premise enough to resist the usual plot turns; the refusal to manufacture conflict is almost perverse.
Díaz situates this squarely in the lineage of European intimacy cinema—Haneke's restraint meets Kiarostami's patient observation—and the formal precision of that framing, the way each scene breathes without apology, marks a filmmaker aware of exactly what he's inheriting.
The entire film hinges on a single directorial choice: letting silences and glances carry the entire emotional architecture, which means everything rides on the actors' ability to communicate want without speaking—and somehow Díaz gets it.
