A satire that actually *functions* as satire—watching a bureaucrat suffocate under the rise of a charismatic fascist is the opposite of the sanitized, consensus-friendly take most would chicken out on, and Polman and de Kroon somehow make the absurdity feel suffocating instead of smug.
The film positions itself deliberately in the lineage of Weimar-era expressionism and contemporary European political cinema, using formal precision—tight framing, controlled sound design—to situate personal paralysis against historical inevitability.
The key choice here is the decision to keep Amouf almost entirely reactive and voiceless; that restraint from the protagonist transforms what could've been a sermon into something genuinely claustrophobic, and it's what separates craft from messaging.
