The scouts
A three-minute board game becoming a descent into capitalist psychosis—it's the kind of premise that sounds like a college project until you realize Wu's actually weaponized it, turning whimsy into genuine unease without ever winking at the audience.
Wu's animation sits in an interesting formal conversation with satirical traditions (Gilliam, Bakshi), though the tonal balance between whimsy and contempt occasionally undercuts the deeper critique; the restraint in the final act, however, shows real compositional discipline.
The specific choice to keep the board game's rules visually clear and almost mundane while the obsessed player's animation subtly degrades—a kind of creeping distortion—does more work than the entire premise, lifting what could've been a blunt satire into something genuinely unsettling.
Reviews
Visually playful, strong directorial instincts, and such fun that you may not even realize the powerful message that Wu delivers about how wealth isolates from community. Capitalism shouldn't be this entertaining.
