The American government has come face to face with an alien and locked it away with no progress, in a 14-minute take on confirmation of the extraterrestrial.

Everyone's waiting for the alien reveal, the conspiracy unraveling, the third-act breakdown—and Pace just... doesn't give it to you, which is exactly why this works. It's a sci-fi premise that actively refuses the genre's comfort food, and that tonal tightrope between dread and dark comedy is where the real alien contact happens.
The restraint here feels descended from a lineage of chamber sci-fi—Arrival, Annihilation's quieter moments—where the formal decision to withhold spectacle becomes the spectacle itself, though the tonal wobble between thriller and comedy occasionally destabilizes what could have been a cleaner formal statement.
The entire film hinges on the decision to play this bureaucratic deadlock through anxious, almost absurdist dialogue rather than visual spectacle, and that one choice—treating first contact like a filing cabinet problem—transforms a modest 14 minutes into something that lands with real specificity.

The climax is a reinstatement of the importance of and need for humanity, empathy and connection, whether it is an alien on the other side, or all the life already inhabiting the planet. Maybe someday, before we are all dead, we might start listening.
