In the dead of winter in remote Maine, forest ranger Reed Decker investigates a string of bodies bearing strange, unidentifiable bite wounds and realizes the predator is now hunting him.

The scouts
A competent creature-feature that hits every beat you'd expect it to—remote setting, mounting dread, the hunter becomes the hunted—but never once makes you question why you're watching it or what it's actually trying to say beneath the bite wounds.
Traut demonstrates formal control over his atmospheric setup and pacing, working in a lineage of isolated-wilderness thrillers with respect for the genre's visual grammar, though the premise itself offers little formal innovation within that tradition.
The film's most effective moment is how Traut isolates Reed in the final act using negative space and minimal dialogue—a restraint that shouldn't work on a ranger-versus-creature premise but does because it trusts the actor's stillness over explanation.
