The scouts
It's a premise that could've been treacly cosmic greeting-card material, but Wang keeps it restrained and strange—there's something genuinely unsettling about what 'contact' actually means when you're this far from home, and she doesn't let us off easy with catharsis.
The film sits elegantly within a lineage of sci-fi shorts concerned with isolation and signal-sending, yet Wang's animation language feels deliberate and spare, refusing the expected visual grandeur in favor of compositional precision that recalls the restraint of late-period Takahata.
The entire film hinges on the choice to keep the astronaut's face obscured until the signal arrives—that single withholding of emotional confirmation, paired with the sound design of the response itself, transforms what could've been sentimental into something genuinely affecting through pure craft discipline.
Reviews
Contact is an animated short made by Katy Wang, who designed, directed, and animated the entire film. I really dig the animation style and the simplicity of the film, one of my favorite discoveries.
