2012 · 15m · México

Directed by Ileana Leyva

Genres: drama, romance

Tones: contemplative, melancholic, tender

A woman decides to carry out a silent pact she made with a man, returning to the house where they lived a passionate relationship years before; her phone call, the silence on the line and three coins falling to the floor tell him he must go to meet her.

The scouts

Everyone's going to read this as a tender reunion story, but Leyva's actually building something much stranger—a woman orchestrating a man's obedience through ritualized silence, and the film never quite lets you decide if that's romantic or unsettling. Most people won't even notice she's subverting the premise.

The restraint is exquisite: a phone call with no dialogue, three coins as narrative percussion, the architecture of a house doing the emotional labor that dialogue would butcher. This sits comfortably in a lineage of minimalist European cinema where what's *not* shown becomes the whole story.

Leyva's decision to make the phone call completely silent—no breathing, no ambient sound, just dead air—transforms what could've been melodrama into something genuinely unsettling; that single absence of audio does more work than most dialogue could.
