The scouts
A four-minute stop-motion meditation on death and consumption that refuses to choose between horror and beauty—the pig doesn't decompose, it *performs*, and watching butchery become balletic choreography is exactly the kind of unsettling premise that makes people uncomfortable in the right way.
Alexandre's formal restraint in the face of grotesque subject matter recalls the deadpan surrealism of Czech animation tradition; the measured pacing and sculptural precision of the volumetric work situate this firmly in the lineage of animated philosophy rather than shock value.
The decision to let the transformation happen in real time—no cuts, no hiding—forces the viewer's eye to track the metamorphosis from living thing to ingredient, and that commitment to continuous observation is what makes the gallows humor actually land instead of feeling cheap.
Reviews
