Day 21 does the thing that makes everyone uncomfortable—it flips the script so hard that survival becomes a question of who *deserves* to inherit the world, and Meier doesn't flinch from that ugliness. Most festivals would sand down the edges; this one leans into them.
The inversion of apocalypse-narrative tropes shows formal awareness, though the execution risks reading as provocation without the thematic rigor that would elevate it into genuine discourse—the cinematography is competent but doesn't yet interrogate its own premises the way the premise demands.
There's a single casting choice here that rewires everything: centering a performer with Down syndrome in a survival thriller reverses the entire visual grammar of who gets framed as threat versus victim, and that one decision does more work than most shorts manage in their entire runtime.
