Two minutes of a man watching sunrise sounds like the definition of treacle, but Van Severen's actually doing something weirder here — I suspect the film's real move is what it *doesn't* show us, or the way it withholds the payoff we're primed to expect from that setup.
A formally restrained meditation on suicidal ideation that locates itself in the lineage of Bresson and Kieślowski — the economy of gesture and light here feels learned, deliberate, aware of what contemplative cinema can hold in two minutes.
The restraint is the whole film: Van Severen commits to following Louis without intervention or underscore, and that refusal to sentimentalize — to just let the sunrise *be* — is the single choice that transforms a premise into something that actually breathes.
