Detective Alice and The Inside Game

The scouts

The premise is doing heavy lifting—self-aware enough to know it's a genre mashup (detective procedural meets queer awakening) without getting precious about it, which is rare. But the whimsy threatens to coast on premise alone, and I'm not convinced the film earns its own joke.

Yang's tonal control here is assured: the film knows exactly when to play the mystery straight and when to let the comedy undercut it, a balance that recalls the deadpan precision of early Greta Gerwig shorts. It's a small film aware of its lineage in comedy-as-form.

The genius move is the sound design layering—the detective-noir score playing against the bright, almost sitcom-y visual language creates the actual tension where the script could've just relied on winking at the audience. That one choice sells the whole thing.
