Drowned Lands Part 5: Descent
2015 · 8m · USA
Directed by Will Schluter
Genres: drama, experimental
Tones: contemplative, mythic
The longest and final part: cliff diving, deep lake, a return to ground level — the Ascent was the way in, and this is the way back down through whatever the previous four parts were burying. Whether descent means resolution or surrender, Schluter leaves to the cut to black.

A finale that goes underwater instead of into voiceover — finally. The whole miniseries has been holding its breath for this dive, and Schluter has the discipline not to surface with a tidy lesson.
Schluter's finale ends in underwater submersion instead of catharsis — a Margaret-with-the-dialogue-removed gesture that earns the cut to black. The whole miniseries was building toward this exact refusal.
The series finale ending in literal underwater submersion rather than catharsis is a hell of a structural commitment. As the final movement of a five-part wordless grief miniseries it earns weight, but as a standalone it's freight without setup.
