A coming-of-age film about a kid and a toilet—yeah, okay, but the subversion here is mostly window dressing; underneath it's still hitting the same emotional beats everyone expects from the genre, just with more feces jokes.
Van works within the established lineage of intimate indie coming-of-age—think early Linklater—but the tonal management between scatological humor and genuine vulnerability feels slightly uneven, a formal risk that doesn't quite crystallize.
What makes this work is the decision to use the dunny itself as both literal and emotional threshold; the spatial staging and the actor's physicality around that single location does more storytelling work than most shorts manage with twice the scope.
