The scouts
A revenge western that does the thing everyone expects it to do — tracks a man toward vengeance, then pulls the rug out with a moral revelation. It's competent genre work, but there's nothing here that makes me sit up and say wait, what? The twist lands because we've been trained to expect it.
Espinoza situates this firmly in the revisionist western tradition — the genre aware of its own mythology — and executes it with formal precision: the long approach through landscape, the night of drinks as moral reckoning, the deferred climax that forces reflection instead of catharsis. That's craft in conversation with a lineage.
The entire film hinges on the performance in that bar scene — how Rafael's face moves from hunger for revenge to something like recognition — and Espinoza trusts it completely, letting the camera sit while the actor does the work. One sustained take of dawning understanding, and suddenly fifteen minutes on a modest budget feels essential.
