The scouts
A 2004 Spanish horror film that weaponizes a real ghost town as a character and then systematically dismantles the "found footage investigation" trope by making the investigators themselves the haunted—it's a premise so elegantly inverted that it shouldn't work, and yet.
Bravo and Parra de Carrizosa demonstrate formal restraint in their use of Belchite's actual ruins, letting the desolate architecture do the narrative heavy lifting in a way that recalls the European gothic tradition while resisting sentimentality.
The decision to film in the actual abandoned village of Belchite rather than a constructed set becomes the entire film—that choice of location as production design collapses the boundary between investigation and inevitability in a way that couldn't exist anywhere else.
