Everyone expects this to be a PSA about teen pregnancy, so it's genuinely refreshing that Olshansky, Cameron Jusay, and Santiago refuse to make Bonnie's life legible as a cautionary tale—the subversion is so quiet you almost miss it, which makes it work.
There's a formal restraint here that recalls the observational documentary tradition of Albert and David Maysles: the filmmakers trust portraiture over argument, letting Bonnie's complexity accumulate through lived detail rather than thematic intervention.
The editing decision to intercut Bonnie's present-day reflections with her hands moving through domestic space—never rushing to explain or resolve—is what elevates this from good intentions into something that actually trusts the viewer to sit with contradiction and resilience at once.
