The scouts
Everyone expects the suicide-letter-writer to be darkly funny or reveal some twist redemption arc, but Montesinos just lets the premise sit there, lets Manuel's empathy become contagion—it's almost boring in how sincere it refuses to be clever, which is exactly why it works.
A film acutely aware of its debt to Kübler-Ross and Ionesco, executing a premise that could collapse into sentimentality with the precision of someone who understands how to hold formal distance while depicting emotional collapse—the restraint is the whole point.
The decision to keep Manuel's own voice out of the suicide letters, to hear only the clients' words read aloud while watching his face absorb them, transforms what could be exploitative into something genuinely unsettling about empathy as a kind of infection.
