The scouts
Grandfather swims out of Maoist China, granddaughter flees 2019 Hong Kong, animated bridge between them. Persepolis-Flee-Waltz with Bashir is a deeply crowded shelf and 'hybrid animated documentary' is now its own genre — but the actual political through-line is worth tolerating the form's familiarity.
Bridging a grandfather's Cultural Revolution escape with a granddaughter's 2019 Hong Kong departure through hybrid animation — Martin-McGuire is working the Flee playbook with genuine intergenerational stakes. Aeon's curation is reliable, and the political timing is unmissable.
Hand-drawn animation, live-action, and archival material braided to bridge a grandfather's 1970s escape swim with his granddaughter's 2019 Hong Kong — the medium-mixing IS the generational bridging, formally. 15 minutes from Aeon, the framework is doing the thematic work.
Reviews
A masterful short film that utilises animation to re-enact the story of a grandfather making the dangerous and deadly swim from China to Hong Kong — searing and devastating.
The fluidity of blending animation with live action and archive allowed us to really play within the parameters of the short framework.
