The scouts
A man saves his business during Greece's economic crisis sounds like the most predictable economic-realism doc imaginable, which is probably why Leousi's choice to make it quietly devastating instead of polemical actually works—though I'm still not sure that's subversive enough to be interesting.
Leousi positions this within the long European lineage of economic-crisis cinema, but her restraint and formal control—letting melancholy breathe rather than prescribe—suggests a maturity of form that situates her among the more considered voices working in this register.
The decision to hold on the generator itself—treating the machine as a character with its own dignity and failing life—is what transforms a familiar economic-collapse premise into something genuinely singular and human-scaled.
Reviews
Nikoleta Leousi's Γεννήτρια / Generator is a devastating blend of character-driven storytelling and political cinema. Deliberately-paced, contemplative and passionate, Generator not only focuses on Greece, but feels very Greek in its approach.
