It's a pretty tender Madrid meets lonely hearts story — competent, melancholic, but I'm not seeing the subversive hook that makes me sit up. Two lonely people find each other through a newspaper ad and it feels like exactly what you'd expect it to feel like.

Beiro works in the lineage of European coming-of-age intimacy — there's a considered restraint here, a formal distance that respects both characters' fragility without sentimentalizing their connection. The restraint is the tradition.

Margot

The newspaper ad as meet-cute is almost quaint now, but what elevates this is the specificity of Gwendolyne's characterization — Beiro commits to her eccentricity without explaining it away, and that refusal to domesticate her strangeness is what makes the tenderness land.
