A confession-as-animation setup sounds like it could go maudlin fast, but Minamisawa and Castro sidestep the obvious catharsis trap—the real provocation isn't the HIV narrative itself, it's how they let animation do the demystifying work that live-action pretends it invented.
The film situates itself squarely in a lineage of activist animation and intimate documentary form, though its formal choices feel more earnest than interrogative—solid craft in service of clarity, which is exactly what the premise demands, even if it doesn't quite trouble the medium itself.
Seven minutes of animated confession could collapse into abstraction, but there's a single formal commitment here—the decision to let animation's artifice become the tool for radical honesty—that transforms what could be a PSA into something that trusts the viewer's intelligence in a way live-action rarely does.
