The scouts
A grief app that lets you text your dead daughter—most films would milk this for sentimental devastation, but García treats it like a bug in the universe, let the absurdity do the heavy lifting. The tonal whiplash between dark comedy and genuine despair is exactly the kind of premise that makes conventional scouts nervous.
García positions this within the lineage of speculative fiction exploring technology's false promises, but the execution feels more sketch than fully considered—the editing rhythms don't quite justify the tonal shifts, and the formal architecture of how we experience the app versus reality could have been much more rigorous.
The singular choice here is the decision to keep the app's responses ambiguous—never letting us know if Luz is actually reaching her daughter or if she's just talking to an algorithm—and that restraint is what transforms a high-concept premise into something genuinely unsettling on a shoestring budget.
