A tree as protagonist in a city allegory should be heavy-handed garbage, but Valenzuela commits so fully to the surreal melancholy that it becomes genuinely unsettling—the abstraction refuses to resolve into message, which is exactly when allegory gets interesting.
The film situates itself in a lineage of poetic animation that values negative space and restraint; the formal decision to keep Pacha herself largely still while the world convulses around her demonstrates considerable compositional control.
The single choice that cracks this open is the sound design—that moment when the ambient hum of the city swallows the park's quietness—because it does the narrative work that animation usually has to render visually, and it costs nothing but attention.
