A hedgehog defending his home against four beasts *should* be boilerplate fable, but Cvijanovic turns the standoff into something genuinely unsettling—the whimsy keeps threatening to crack, and it never fully resolves which side we're supposed to be rooting for. That ambivalence is the whole point, and most animators would've chickened out.
Cvijanovic's control of tone and pacing situates this squarely in the European animation tradition—think Jiri Trnka's moral precision meets contemporary sensibility—where a 10-minute runtime becomes an argument about belonging and preservation told entirely through compositional restraint and the weight of silence. The film knows exactly what tradition it's in conversation with, and respects it enough to complicate it.
The entire film pivots on a single choice: the decision to animate the hedgehog's defense not as action but as stubborn, almost mundane resistance—holding ground through stillness rather than heroics—which transforms a premise about property into something tender and devastating about what we're willing to lose. That one tonal commitment elevates every frame.
