A cloud as a metaphor for lost childhood friendships—it's almost too tidy, and the melancholy reads more like greeting-card sentimentality than genuine subversion. I respect the restraint, but I wanted it to break something.
Maccelli sits squarely in the lineage of poetic animation—there's a clear debt to Eastern European tradition and the wordless coming-of-age fable—and executes with formal grace, though the emotional register feels well-trodden for the form.
That decision to make the cloud physically dissolve as Juan ages, rather than simply fade from narrative attention, transforms an obvious metaphor into something tactile and genuinely crushing—the animation choice is what makes the melancholy land.
