The scouts
A working-class immigrant missing her daughter's wedding should be obvious melodrama, but Seresesky refuses the emotional crescendo—the film's quiet refusal to climax is genuinely perverse, and I'm annoyed it works.
The film sits squarely in the neorealist tradition, yet the restraint here feels less Kiarostami and more a deliberate conversation with Spanish cinema's own documentary impulse; the formal clarity is almost austere.
Seresesky's decision to let the wedding remain offscreen—to keep cutting back to Mirta's impossible day rather than the event itself—transforms what could've been conventional tragedy into something about invisible labor and presence that refuses to be witnessed.
