Most films would've turned this into a revenge narrative or a trauma melodrama, but Escalante just leaves you in the dark with two strangers and meaningless violence—no catharsis, no answers, just the mechanics of evil grinding on. It's perverse and uncommercial enough to feel genuinely unsettling.
The film sits uneasily between genre exercise and formal provocation, resisting the narrative satisfactions that would anchor it in either thriller or character study tradition; the restraint is deliberate but the lineage unclear.
The real coup is the sound design in the aftermath—that choice to strip away score and let only ambient noise and breathing remain transforms what could've been exploitation into something claustrophobic and intimate.
