Martin was born on the wrong rock; Martin is a mushroom and overcomes enormous challenges to travel to a distant rock where he hopes to be accepted, in a story about equality and the acceptance of our differences.

The scouts
A mushroom protagonist on a pilgrimage for acceptance sounds like it *should* be treacly, but Cawood refuses the easy metaphor—this stays pleasantly weird and doesn't resolve into a sermon, which is rarer than it should be.
The film sits comfortably in the lineage of stop-motion fables (Laika, Aardman), executing its formal restraint with consistency; the design choices are assured without showboating, letting the journey carry philosophical weight.
The decision to make Martin small, slow, and literally rooted—then animate him overcoming geological obstacles through patient persistence rather than heroic leaps—transforms a stock equality parable into something tactile and earned.
