A coming-of-age sports drama about a pilot facing a legend? On paper it's the most consensus-friendly premise imaginable—which is exactly why I'm skeptical unless Wang found a way to invert the underdog formula entirely.
Wang positions this within the classical mentor-versus-protégé lineage, and the formal rigor of aviation cinematography paired with intimate character study suggests a filmmaker conscious of how tension lives in restraint rather than spectacle.
The real pickup here isn't the premise—it's whatever Wang does with the cockpit itself as a confined emotional space, and whether the sound design of the aircraft becomes a character that does the tonal heavy lifting a seven-minute frame can't afford to waste.
