In the Nord of France, three Italian miners face the harshness of work underground. The day after the Sainte-Barbe festival, a release of pigeons offers them a parenthesis before returning below — a moment where song and rhythm surface where least expected.

The scouts
A two-minute ode to working-class dignity that could've been maudlin in lesser hands, but Viglianisi refuses easy sentiment — the pigeons aren't metaphor, they're just pigeons, and that refusal to explain itself is genuinely strange.
This sits comfortably in a lineage of humanist documentary-drama (Vigo, the Dardennes) while maintaining formal precision: the editing knows exactly when to linger on faces, when to cut to sky, how song becomes structure rather than ornament.
The decision to let the miners actually sing — untrained, uncertain voices layered over work footage — transforms what could be sentimental into something tactile and real; that single choice of casting authenticity over polish does all the heavy lifting.
