It's a competent smartphone-corruption parable, but the premise does the work for you—there's nothing here that subverts the obviousness of 'teen gets phone, teen gets lost in comparison.' Rural Kyrgyzstan deserved a weirder, nastier bite.
Maksatbekov demonstrates formal restraint in the visual language, and the melancholic register sits properly in the contemporary coming-of-age lineage; the question is whether the film's meditation on isolation finds anything formally or thematically that hasn't already been exhausted by superior entries in this tradition.
The specificity of setting a social-media crisis in rural Kyrgyzstan—and the particular textural and acoustic choices that must accompany that specificity—suggests Maksatbekov knows exactly where the pressure point is; that geographic and cultural particularity is the decision that could elevate this from cautionary tale into something genuinely felt.
