The scouts
A 1959 NFB doc about a classical composer and teacher—sounds like the safest possible subject, and it probably is, which is exactly why I'm not picking it.
Healey Willan deserves this kind of attentive, unhurried portrait; Blais tracks a life of genuine pedagogical consequence across three institutional spaces with the formal restraint that only comes from understanding how documentation itself becomes a form of reverence.
The real work here might be invisible—the decision to let Willan's own organ playing carry the emotional weight instead of reaching for orchestral arrangement shows a discipline that respects both the subject and the viewer's intelligence.
