The scouts
A Nairobi noir that flips the script on both the femme fatale AND the therapist—takes the most exhausted genre on earth and plants it in a place where nobody expects it, then has the audacity to make the manipulator a patient, not a seductress. It's perverse, it knows it, and it's exactly right.
Oyula demonstrates a precise command of noir grammar—the visual and narrative codes are all legible—but what anchors this isn't homage; it's the specificity of setting and the way the therapist's professional ethics become the story's actual frame, reshaping a century-old archetype into something that demands reconsideration.
The reversal of who's really in control lives or dies on a single performance choice—whether the therapist reads as complicit, coerced, or caught—and Oyula's casting decision and the subtle shifts in eye contact across those scenes is what makes the manipulation feel *real* instead of mechanical.
Reviews
The innovative, minimalist but stylish dark cinematography is by far the winning aspect of this film. The desaturated, picturesque visuals are reminiscent of Sophia Coppola's work.
