The scouts
A well-meaning immigrant story that hits every expected beat—the outsider, the mean kids, the kind ally—and asks nothing dangerous of either the audience or itself.
Varughese works within a lineage of ensemble coming-of-age cinema, using the dual perspective of Mela and Allison to construct a formally balanced meditation on complicity and courage that recalls the restraint of early Atom Egoyan.
The film's entire moral weight rests on Allison's choice, and Varughese makes it land by letting the camera linger on her face in the moments before she acts—a single sustained look that does the work three pages of dialogue couldn't.
