The scouts
Everyone expects ghosts to unsettle; Yuliyanto flips it—the real horror is bureaucratic indifference dressed up as progress, and the specter becomes the only one asking uncomfortable questions. It's a genre film that uses its fantastical permission slip to trash the machinery instead of the machinery using it.
The film's formal precision—how it holds the lighthouse as both literal and figurative threshold, how it lets silence and ceremony do the thematic work—marks Yuliyanto as working in a lineage of contemplative cinema that trusts composition over exposition. The satire lands because the craft never winks.
The decision to keep the ghost's desperation quiet, almost mundane against the inauguration's false fanfare, does everything: it makes the son's drowning matter more than any melodrama could, and transforms a 20-minute film shot in one location into something that feels inexplicably vast.
Reviews
Haris Yuliyanto creates a very interesting narrative, where the supernatural is implemented in order to make a sociopolitical comment, regarding the way the government is always keen to highlight the moves forward, as in the case of the port development project, which are actually what brings votes, but is quite eager to push the issues, and even more, the tragedies that take place, in the background. Apart from the rather interesting comment and the intriguingly subtle approach Yuliyanto takes, the film is also quite entertaining, particularly through the interactions of the two lighthouse workers, which are filled with humor, comradeship, and a slight surreal element since Galon does not seem surprised at all to see the ghost of his former colleague appear before him.
