In a small village in deep Castile, Antonio lives completely alone except for his only company, Montesco, a dog who accompanies him everywhere, as loneliness echoes through increasingly abandoned streets.

The scouts
Everyone expects the dog to be a metaphor for companionship, but Montesco refuses that easy reading — it's just a dog, and that's somehow more devastating than any symbolic weight could be.
The film moves with the measured restraint of the Spanish neorealist tradition, letting negative space and the rhythms of an emptying village do the narrative work that dialogue won't.
The decision to keep the camera at Antonio's eye level—never looking down at the dog, never looking up at the sky—collapses the distance between man and animal in a way that transforms a simple rural portrait into something indelible.
