Monument Valley 3 is gorgeous in the way a lot of indie animation is gorgeous—but it never quite breaks its own spell, never does the weird thing that would make you actually remember it instead of just admiring it. Competent mythmaking, which is the enemy of interesting.
Moth's geometric landscapes sit comfortably in the lineage of contemplative animation that stretches from Takahata through contemporary studio practices; the film's restraint—its refusal of obvious emotional beats—marks a filmmaker conscious of formal tradition. Whether that restraint becomes depth or merely distance is the argument worth having.
The signal-sending mechanic could've been pure convenience, but Moth makes the lighthouse beam *feel* like the film's emotional axis—every animation choice before it is in service to that one moment of transmission, which is restraint and purpose at exactly the right ratio for six minutes.
