A kid-uses-imagination-to-cope premise is so well-trodden it's basically a greeting card, and Nolan doesn't seem interested in upending it—which means I'm not interested either.
Nolan's animation sits comfortably in the NFB's lineage of humanistic, contemplative children's work; the formal restraint in depicting Grace's inner life suggests a filmmaker aware of and respectful toward that tradition.
The real craft move here is how Nolan uses animation's plasticity to blur Grace's imagination into her lived reality without ever feeling precious about it—that seamless visual grammar is what makes the mother's depression legible through a child's eyes rather than didactic.
