A 1958 military documentary that's *supposed* to be about hardware and protocol—except it sits there, quiet and almost elegiac, treating a training exercise like a meditation on Cold War anxiety. Most people sleep through this; I suspect that's the point.
Hewitson's restraint here is exemplary—the contemplative register elevates what could be mere military PR into something formally sustained and historically situated, a Canadian documentary tradition at its most assured and purposeful.
There's a particular decision to let silence and engine drone carry the tension instead of commentary, and it transforms the whole thing from procedural into something genuinely unsettling—the choice to trust the viewer's attention is what makes this work.
