It's a premise that could've been maudlin—lonely guy, Christmas Eve, phone calls—but Almanza walks a knife edge between comedy and genuine ache, never letting sentiment tip into saccharine, which frankly bores me less than I expected.
The film's restraint and tonal precision feel rooted in a tradition of intimate character study; there's a lineage here—Koreeda, maybe early Haneke—in how it lets silence and failed connection do the heavy work rather than score or performance histrionics.
What makes this work isn't the concept but the decision to play José's calls mostly *off-screen*, forcing us to read his isolation through body language and reaction shots alone—five minutes on a shoestring, but that formal choice transforms it from sketch into something genuinely tender and specific.
