A rescue-quest romance told through octopuses is exactly the kind of premise that *should* be insufferable, yet somehow the film earns its sincerity—which almost annoys me, because I wanted to hate it on principle.
The film sits comfortably in the tradition of hand-drawn character animation, demonstrating clean staging and expressive movement that recalls the French school's attention to gesture and spatial composition.
What makes this work on a shoestring is the decision to commit entirely to the octopuses' physicality—eight limbs become a language of their own, and every tentacle curl does more emotional work than dialogue ever could.
